What to Pack in Baby's Luggage for a Sunny Vacation

Husband and I love traveling, particularly when its to escape our very cold Canadian winters. So, we recently travelled to the Dominican Republic and decided to bring our 3-month old baby. After a lot of research, here’s what we packed in baby’s luggage to ensure a smooth trip (check out my post on tips and tricks for travelling to an all inclusive resort with a baby here).

DIAPER BAG

Mini bag - Keep a small bag inside your diaper bag with the necessary items for 1 diaper change. The washrooms on the plane are too small to carry the whole diaper bag. And honestly, you only need a few items, so it helps speed up the process. Our mini-bag included:
- 2 x diapers
- 1 x onesie
- 1 x pyjama
- wipes
- rash cream
- a change mat
- hand sanitizer

Small blanket

Ziploc bags in case of blowouts on the plane.

Infant Tylenol - We didn't need to use it, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Pacifier wipes - These were very useful throughout the whole trip. They could also be very useful to clean bottle nipples if you’re stuck.

Sunhat - Keep the sunhat with you. We had to walk from the plane to a bus and little J had to wait in the sun for a few minutes.

Diapers - enough for a whole day’s worth, in case of flights delays and/or accidents.

Breastfeeding cover

FEEDING

Dishcloth - I brought my own dishcloth to dry little J’s bottles. But I was super paranoid about germs…

Bottle brush

2 x bottles + disposable liners (tips on bottle feeding on a trip can be found in this post)

Pump + charger - if you’re going to bring your pump, make sure that the voltage at your destination supports your machine. If not, make sure you bring converters and adapters.

Formula - While I am exclusively pumping, we brought formula just in case I suddenly didn’t produce enough or if I was stuck and couldn’t pump on time.

Cooler + ice packs for breastmilk - I have been able to build a good freezer stash of breastmilk over the last few months, so I calculated approximately how much I pump per session and how much milk I would need for the whole trip + extra to determine how much bags I should pull out of the freezer. I used those bags before the fresh milk. It was particularly useful to do it that way because it ensured that I had enough milk on the way back when our flight got delayed and I couldn’t pump as often.

Breastmilk freezer bags - I used those to store the milk in the fridge to avoid having to wash my pumping bottles too often.

CLOTHING

3 x long sleeved pygamas - in case the A/C in the room was too cold.

7 x Onesies - we decided to pack light and only bring 1 onesie per day. We brought laundry detergent and washed items in the sink when we needed extra.

2 x shorts

1 x pants - we brought it for him to wear in the evenings to protect him from bugs when outside

2 x socks

1 x shoes + 1 x sandals

2 x thin blankets - these were very useful in the evening and to cover from the sun in the early mornings.

One-piece bathing suit + reusable swim diaper - We used a reusable swim diaper (instead of disposable) and used a diaper cloth liner inside. That way, if he pooped, it would be easier to wash. Another tip: put on his one-piece bathing suit before leaving the hotel room, but put on a regular diaper and only change him into the swim diaper when your little one is ready to take a dip. It’ll save you a lot of hassle at the pool.

Beach towel

TOILETERIES

Diapers - we brought a case of 100 diapers and split them between little J’s and our luggage in case one of them got lost.

2 x change mats (in addition to the one in our diaper bag) - we kept one change mat in the hotel room and the other mat we put inside the stroller (under little J) in case of a blowout. We didn't want to have to deal with a dirty stroller liner while on vacation.

2 x bath towels

Bath soap/shampoo - I would suggest bringing the full size bottle (as opposed to the travel size)

Body cream

Hair comb

4 x Wash cloths - we use 2 washcloths at each bath. Bring however many you need. We decided to wash them after each use instead of brining enough for a bath every day.

Wipes

Nail clippers

Thermometer

Nasal Aspirator

Diaper Genie travel bags - These were particularly useful when we were at the pool and on the plane, and even at the hotel. There was only one garbage can in the kitchen, at least these bags helped keep the odours at bay…

50+ Kids Sunscreen - speak to your doctor before applying sunscreen on a baby under 6 months.

Bug repellent - speak to your doctor before applying bug repellent on a baby under 6 months.

GEAR

Baby carrier

Stroller

Stroller fan - that item is definitely a must for your travel to any hot destination. It provided the perfect breeze for little J on very hot days.

Stroller net

BabyMoov UV tent - read more about how useful this tent was here

OTHER

Baby laundry detergent, stain remover, and dish soap - we brought those in small travel containers. I needed the dish soap to wash the bottles/pump parts, and the stain remover/laundry detergent combo was very useful for the multiple blowouts little J throughout the trip!

2 x pacifiers + pacifier clip

Medication

Health booklet - We decided to bring it just in case little J needed to see a doctor. Had that been the case, we would’ve had his most up to date health information.
